Year 5 : Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Introduction

The ILS course revises the knowledge and skills to:

identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest;
recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach;
undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres;
utilise non-technical skills to facilitate initial leadership and effective team membership

Certification is by The Resuscitation Council (UK) and is dependent upon successful completion of all skills workshops on a continuous assessment basis, and is valid for twelve months.

Sessions

Lecture: The Causes and Prevention of Cardiac Arrest
1. Understand the Causes of Cardiac Arrest and be able to implement a safe methodical assessment of the sick patient.
Lecture: The ALS Algorithm
1. Plan a patient's care in the cardiac arrest scenario, be able to recognise shockable and non-shockable rhythms and their appropriate management.
Skills Station: Airway Management
1. Demonstrate the examination of the patient's airway and be able to differentiate the level of interventions required from simple manoeuvres to basic airway adjuncts.
Skills Station: Recognition of Cardiac Arrest and Safe Defibrillation
1. Recognise the patient in cardiac arrest, implement safe and effective uninterrupted chest compressions and the safe application and appropriate operation of a defibrillator in AUTOMATIC mode.
Skills Consolidation
1. Demonstration of the skills and knowledge gained from the course through a variety of instructor led scenarios.
Skills Station: A,B,C,D,E assessment of the Sick Patient
1. Illustrate the A,B,C,D,E assessment.
