The physical examination must be thorough and systematic; based on a system which progresses logically from a general to a systems-based survey. It should be conducted in a manner that recognises the patient’s right to autonomy, culture and beliefs and is appropriate to the age, sex and physical and mental state of the patient. It must elucidate abnormalities that are common, important and diagnostic.
